Most random, disturbing, unpredicted book I have ever read.

The book that altered my brain chemistry and left me questioning my existence as an “earthling” is Sayaka Murata’s “Earthlings.” This novel is a mind-blowing, disturbing, and unpredictable read that takes dark and twisted turns as you slide through its pages until the very end.

Initially, I almost DNF this book because it seemed nonsensical and childish in the beginning. However, after reading reviews, I realized that the cute cover and magical atmosphere at the start are deceiving. As the pages turned, the book gradually darkened, swallowing me up in its narrative.

Despite the trigger warnings for cannibalism and other disturbing themes, I was not prepared for the events that unfolded. Each chapter stopped my brain from functioning, leaving me both disgusted and entertained. The book delves into childhood trauma, sexual harassment, and family issues in a captivating yet unsettling manner. There were times when I needed to put the book down, take a deep breath, or even take a day break from reading it. However, it was an unputdownable book that kept me questioning where the story was going.

The themes of societal critique and the need to question conformity are powerfully explored in “Earthlings.” The novel showcases the unrealistic pressures of family and society to perform in a certain way, highlighting the detrimental consequences of not conforming. Despite the horrifying, disturbing, and uncomfortable feelings it evokes, the book is a must-read for those seeking a unique and thought-provoking experience.

While there are other books that touch on similar themes, “Earthlings” stands out for its unpredictability and unapologetic narrative style. It is a book that will leave a lasting impression and challenge your perceptions of what it means to be human.

In summary, “Earthlings” by Sayaka Murata is a deeply unsettling yet captivating novel that explores the darker aspects of human society and individual experiences. It is not for the faint of heart but is a must-read for those who enjoy quirky, thought-provoking, and disturbing literature.

Let me share some of my favorite lines from this book:

That sort of thing happens everywhere, you know. We just don’t see it. Even now, someone somewhere in the world is being used as a tool. It’ll happen again today too. That’s all it is.

“…Adults are expected to turn a blind eye to anything abnormal, aren’t they? That’s the way it is. Why so virtuous now? You’re just a regular adult, after all. All you have to do is ignore it, just like any other regular adult.”

“Plenty of people look squarely at things they don’t want to see and live with them.”

Overall rating: 4.3 stars out of 5. I would never regret reading this book.
